In the 15 years since Hormones Matter (HM) first launched, we have published more than 1700 articles and case stories. Although our publishing has slowed in recent years, our articles have stood the test of time and many still receive thousands of views per month. Articles published on HM drive research on chronic illness. If you write about chronic illness, we want you to publish on HM.
What We Publish
We publish three types of articles on HM:
- research commentary and analysis
- hypotheses
- first-person case stories
We are open to any health-related topic, the more complicated the better. We support the long form exploration of ideas, whether that idea emanates from a particular research topic or a personal health issue.
For Researchers
Academic publishing, though necessary, is tedious, frustrating, and often paywalled to most readers outside of academia or medicine. Publishing on a health site such as HM, while certainly not as prestigious as publishing in an academic journal, is refreshingly easy, reaches more readers than most journals, and is likely to inspire discussions from experts and patients alike.
By publishing on HM, you can take your research out of the academic closet and reach the people who need to read your work the most. You may write about your findings and link to your own published articles to drive more views. You may also explore ideas or hypotheses that would not be permitted with more traditional publishing. Whatever avenue you choose, publishing on HM will become one of the more fun and rewarding aspects of your academic endeavors.
Clinicians
So much clinical knowledge is lost because busy clinicians have nowhere to easily publish their findings and insights. Let HM be that place. Let us share what you have learned so that others may benefit.
A Note About Case Stories
The cornerstone of HM publishing is the personal case story. To date, we have published over 300 case narratives covering a wide spectrum of complicated illnesses and drug reactions.
Unfiltered case narratives detailing the complexity of modern illness not only gives voice to the voiceless and shows the human side of illness, something I think has been lost to the cold sterility of modern medicine, these stories drive research and understanding in some very real and tangible ways.
If you have a complicated health issue that has defied medical diagnostics and treatments, publish your case story here. The broader HM community may have useful insight, your story may help another person in a similar situation, and it will likely drive research, perhaps not immediately, but most assuredly over time.
For Substack and Patreon Writers
In the past, we published original articles only, and that remains largely true today. With the growth of self-publishing sites like Substack or Patreon though, we have decided to loosen that rule just a bit. If you have a Substack or Patreon page, write thoughtful, well-researched, and appropriately cited articles, or personal case explorations about your own health, we would like you to cross-publish on HM and cross-link back to your page. Together we can build a bigger audience for your work and ours.
What We Will Not Publish
We do not publish content or advertising disguised as articles and we will not publish AI assisted or AI-written articles. All writers must be human. All research must be legitimate and cited appropriately.
For those interested in sharing their case stories, please do not use AI. While it may seem logical to run your case story through an AI app for assistance, it diminishes the poignancy of your story and flattens the very real suffering you experienced. We will help you edit and prepare your story.
